Five Tips To Set Boundaries As An Au Pair

It is sometimes difficult to “switch off” as an Au Pair because you feel guilty about not helping out with the kids during your time off.
That is why boundaries are so important.
We always urge you to communicate to your host family when you are overwhelmed by the unspoken need to be present even during your time off.
You are not an awful Au Pair or falling short of holding up your end of the cultural exchange deal when you also do things that spark personal joy during your time off.
Here are five tips to set your boundaries as an Au Pair:
1.) During the interview process, establish whether or not your host family would like for you to join them on outings or family occasions such as holidays or birthdays.
2.) Remember that it is okay to remind your host family when it’s your time off.
Communication is key!
3.) Establish with the host family what they need from you.
4.) Recharge your batteries often.
5.) Do things outside of the family unit to energize yourself and establish bonds that extend beyond the family; this makes for a richer cultural exchange beyond your immediate surroundings.

The family will be your main priority, but there is nothing wrong with having lots of fun!

Remember to be assertive and address any issues that may leave you feeling uncertain about time constraints.

Example:
If you have reason to believe that you are dedicating more hours to your work schedule than you had initially agreed upon, then it is a conversation worth having with your host parent(s).
More often than not, a brief conversation about schedules can prevent the inevitable display of passive-aggressive behaviour, which is not healthy for any of the parties involved.
Communication is important when it comes to setting your boundaries.
It is not always comfortable or easy, but SO worth it!
