Anri, a Namibian Au Pair, recently celebrated her first year in the USA – and she’s decided to extend for a second year! Reflecting on her journey, Anri shared a heartfelt account of what it truly means to live, work, and grow as an Au Pair.

 

“In this year of being an Au Pair, I’ve learned so much, and I’m thankful for everything. It’s been a rollercoaster – so much happiness and, yes, some sadness too. But if I could do it all over again, I would do it exactly this way.”

 

Being an Au Pair pushes you out of your comfort zone. Anri explains:

 

“It forces you to step out of that little box you’ve been in your whole life. Even when it’s scary, you do it because you’re excited for what’s to come.”

“My little girl loves playing with bugs. One day she brought a cricket into my room. Her excitement was contagious – but when it jumped, I had to calmly guide her to release it back to its family.”

 

Rescuing wildlife: From hummingbirds to tiny insects, Anri teaches her host children empathy and care for all living things.

 

Becoming “Annie the Nanny”: Since the children struggle to say her name, they started calling her Annie because they love the movie Annie. It stuck, and now it’s the affectionate name they use every day.

 

“They look up to you – they learn from your reactions, your patience, and your love.”

 

 

A Glimpse Into Parenthood as an Au Pair

 

With her host parents often away at work, Anri witness milestones and special moments that parents sometimes miss. She shares:

 

“You’ll be called ‘mom’ accidentally many times, but that’s part of the journey. Even when it’s tough, seeing them grow, laugh, and learn makes everything worth it.”
