Meet Melissa, a South African whose 21st birthday became an unforgettable milestone as she embarked on an Au Pair journey in Italy.
Melissa’s story began with a simple yet profound question: What did she want from her twenties? Determined to explore the world, she set her sights on Au Pairing in Italy after gaining two years of local Au Pairing experience in South Africa.
With the help of Carla’s Au Pairs, Melissa found herself matched with a warm and welcoming family in Oderzo, just outside Venice.
Despite initial challenges, like adjusting to a vegetarian lifestyle, Melissa quickly bonded with her host family, creating enduring memories with Sofia and Viola, her host siblings.
Navigating language barriers and cultural differences proved to be hurdles, but Melissa’s unwavering determination prevailed. She immersed herself in learning Italian, navigating miscommunications with humour and grace, and finding joy in the unique experiences of daily life in Italy.
From charming small-town adventures to unforgettable weekends in Milan and Venice, Melissa embraced every opportunity for exploration. Despite occasional bouts of loneliness, she found solace in her newfound independence and the supportive community around her.
Reflecting on her transformative journey, Melissa generously shares invaluable tips for future Au Pairs considering a similar adventure:
Don’t overthink traveling: Research your destinations and activities, but don’t be afraid to get lost—sometimes, that’s where the best experiences happen.
Consult locals: Seek recommendations from local people; they often know the hidden gems.
Book wisely: Save money by booking tickets in advance or directly from the place you want to visit (avoid third-party sellers).
Bring a piece of home: Something that will make you feel comfortable when the day seems a bit challenging. For Melissa, that was taking her pillow with her.
Conduct multiple interviews: Have more than one interview and assess your compatibility.
Ask important questions: Be prepared for interviews; don’t let excitement overshadow essential inquiries.
Initiate connections: As the newcomer, take the initiative to reach out and make friends; don’t be shy.
As Melissa bid farewell to Italy and returned to South Africa, she carried with her a newfound confidence, a deeper understanding of cultural diversity, and a passion for lifelong learning. Her Au Pair experience not only broadened her horizons but also left a lasting mark on her journey through life, proving that with an open mind and adventurous spirit, the world truly became her oyster.
As Melissa reflects on her seven-year journey back in South Africa, she realizes that her time as an Au Pair in Italy marked the beginning of something extraordinary. What started as a bold move in her 20s led to unexpected opportunities, including relocating to Pretoria.
Although she thought her Au Pair experience would end, it became a calling, leading her to her current roles as a homeschool teacher and Au Pair, where she relishes every moment. With supportive employers, she’s explored destinations worldwide, fuelling her passion for travel and education.
Looking forward, Melissa aims to focus more on homeschooling, guided by the virtues of open-mindedness and adaptability instilled in her by her Au Pair experience. Most importantly, she learned that anything is possible in the future, including finding love—a wish she made at the Trevi Fountain during her memorable birthday celebration in Rome!
