How To Make Friends Abroad As A Self-Diagnosed Introvert?
Super Au Pair, Schane shares her tips to help you through your first few months as an Au Pair Abroad!

After moping in her host family’s house for a good two weeks
and having the “I wanna get the hell out of here” thoughts,
Schane decided to
STOP fearing and start LIVING.

Schane made contact with a fellow Au Pair living just 15 minutes away from her in the States.
It did not take too long for these two to become inseparable. They religiously attended their Au Pair meetings and made friends from all over the world!!
Together, these friends travelled to numerous States, tasted interesting food together, laughed until their stomach hurts & went for frozen yoghurt after a tough day.
Now, how on EARTH did Schane go from shy, to well, quite the opposite?
Here are Schane’s top tips for surviving your Au Pair year:
1.) Get your mindset right. It all starts with YOU!
Put yourself out there. Who knows what you might find…?
2.) Create a bucket list. Schane’s top tip is to create a bucket list before
you start your year abroad. Make a point of travelling to those places on your list.
You will feel free, awe-inspired, powerful and strong. Trust us on this one!
3.) Get your expectations in check and be okay with it.
You ARE going to be sad. You’re even going to feel alone sometimes even though you
have friends and a great support system. This year will put you out of your comfort zone,
but that is the best part!
You will grow!
4.) Do not be afraid to fail, because you will only learn.
Do we even need to say more?
5.) Make the most of your Au Pair meetings. They are there for a reason.
CAP only work with the best international partners, who care about your journey.
In most of our destinations, you will have Au Pair meetings to meet other Au Pairs close to you
and make friends with them. Utilize this and go with an open mind.
6.) Be eager to learn! Learn more about the culture you are living in NOW!
Be open-minded, taste new foods, speak to the people and understand their point of view.
You will be surprised at what you can discover!
7.) Trust our international partners. They also want to see you grow. Reach out to them if you have questions,
or need any help!
Well, there you have it!
Do not be afraid to get on that plane into the unknown!
You got this.
Schane dared to travel to eight countries (and counting), made friends from all over the world and was an AMAZING bigger sister to her host kids.
Wow, Schane, you are such a wonder-woman!!
