Religion: Setting The Record Straight:

We know, religion is a very important aspect in so many people’s lives, and it is obviously not something you want to compromise on.
It is crucial to remember that you never have to give up your religion or your beliefs when you are an Au Pair abroad, and no host family will expect that from you.
It can happen that you’ll match with a family whose beliefs are different than yours, and it may seem uncomfortable at first, BUT we are here to set the record straight by answering THREE most asked questions:
#1: Do I have to give up my religion?

NO! You never have to give up your religion. You can still practise your religion in your host country, as long as you are also being respectful towards their views.
Mutual respect, communication, compassion and curiosity will make a placement successful where there are different views on important topics like religion.
#2: Can I still attend religious events?

Yes, you can, as long as it also fits the host family’s schedule. Open communication is important in a situation like this, and it is even more crucial to communicate your needs to your host family.
In fact, by attending religious events, you will meet new people who may become lifelong friends.
#3: Must I be honest about my religion?

YES, you must be honest about your religion as it will make your life much easier. You will fill it in on the application forms, and you can chat with your family about it during interviews too, before matching with your host family.
Ask your host family what your schedule will look like and discuss anything that you foresee could be a problem.
Au Pairing is all about cultural exchange, living and immersing yourself in the new culture. You must be open-minded and adaptable.
This does not mean that you have to abandon your beliefs or values.
It is, however, important to keep an open mind so you can fully experience the cultural exchange experience!
